How to Help Eastern Bluebirds in Winter
Eastern bluebirds are partial migrants—some head south for the winter, while others stay behind. In colder months, they shift from their usual insect diet to fruits, like mistletoe, sumac, tupelo, currants, and wild holly.
To support bluebirds during winter, offer energy-rich foods like suet (especially fruit and berry suet), mealworms, softened fruits, peanut butter, and even crushed cornmeal. Suet is particularly important for providing the fat they need to stay warm and energized.
Remember, bluebirds won’t eat regular birdseed or nectar. Be sure to wash any fruit you provide to avoid pesticides that could harm them. By offering the right food, you’ll help bluebirds survive the chill and thrive through the winter months.
